High-Strength ER5356 TIG Rod for Structural, Marine and Fabrication Work

Eagle ER5356 is a premium aluminum-magnesium TIG filler rod designed for applications where higher strength, toughness and corrosion resistance are important.

Containing approximately 5% magnesium, ER5356 is commonly used on 5XXX- and 6XXX-series aluminum alloys and is especially well suited for structural aluminum, trailers, transportation equipment, marine fabrication and general heavy aluminum repair. Hobart lists 5356 as a general-purpose aluminum/magnesium filler with about 40 ksi typical tensile strength, high ductility and toughness, and very good colour match after anodizing.

Eagle ER5356 TIG Rod is a strong choice when the finished weld needs more strength and a better anodized appearance than a typical 4043 filler.

Higher Strength. Excellent Corrosion Resistance. Built for Demanding Aluminum Work.

Eagle ER5356 TIG Rod is recommended for:

5052 aluminum
5083 aluminum
5086 aluminum
5454 aluminum
5456 aluminum
6061 aluminum
6063 aluminum
Structural aluminum
Truck and trailer fabrication
Marine fabrication
Small boats
Transportation equipment
Rail cars and bus panels
General aluminum repair
Heavy aluminum fabrication

ER5356 is especially useful where higher strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and good anodized colour match are important.

Clean the weld area thoroughly before welding.

Remove all oil, grease, lubricants, coatings, dirt and oxide from the aluminum surface.

Use a dedicated stainless steel wire brush for oxide removal and keep the brush reserved for aluminum only to help prevent contamination.

For typical TIG welding, use 100% Argon shielding gas.
Argon/Helium mixtures may also be used where additional heat input is required.

Use AC current for TIG / GTAW aluminum welding and adjust amperage according to material thickness, joint design and rod diameter.

Maintain proper torch angle and filler-rod placement while keeping the end of the filler rod inside the shielding-gas envelope.

Eagle ER5356 is an aluminum-magnesium TIG filler rod containing approximately 4.5–5.5% magnesium.

The magnesium addition provides a high-strength weld deposit with excellent ductility, fatigue strength and toughness. ER5356 also provides very good colour match after anodizing on many 5XXX- and 6XXX-series aluminum alloys.

Why Eagle ER5356 TIG Rod?

Higher strength — approximately 40,000 psi typical tensile strength.

Excellent toughness — high ductility, fatigue strength and toughness make it suitable for demanding fabricated aluminum components.

Excellent for 5XXX-series aluminum — commonly used on alloys such as 5083, 5086 and other aluminum-magnesium base materials.

Suitable for many 6XXX-series applications — including 6061 and 6063 where 5356 is an appropriate filler choice.
Very good anodized colour match — produces a much better colour match after anodizing than many silicon-based fillers.

ER5356 TIG or ER4043 TIG?

Choose Eagle ER5356 TIG when you want higher strength, greater toughness, excellent marine corrosion resistance or better colour match after anodizing.

Choose Eagle ER4043 TIG when you want excellent puddle fluidity, easier wetting and reduced hot-cracking sensitivity, especially for general fabrication and cast aluminum repair.
In simple terms:

ER5356 TIG = higher-strength aluminum-magnesium filler
ER4043 TIG = smooth-flowing general-purpose aluminum-silicon filler
