ER309L TIG Rod for Stainless-to-Carbon Steel and Dissimilar Metal Welding

Eagle ER309L is a premium low-carbon stainless steel TIG filler rod designed for joining 300-series stainless steels to carbon or low-alloy steels, as well as welding similar 309/309L stainless alloys.

Its higher chromium and nickel content helps accommodate dilution when welding dissimilar metals, while the low carbon level helps improve resistance to intergranular corrosion.

Eagle ER309L is a strong choice for stainless-to-steel fabrication, piping, repair, clad steel work and other applications where different base metals need to be joined reliably.

Dissimilar Metals. Strong Welds. Reliable TIG Performance.

Eagle ER309L TIG Rod is recommended for:

Stainless steel to carbon steel
Stainless steel to low-alloy steel
309 and 309L stainless steel
Dissimilar metal joints
Clad steel welding
High-pressure piping and tubing
Petrochemical fabrication
Industrial repair
Maintenance welding
General stainless fabrication

ER309/309L is ideal for welding dissimilar alloys, corresponding stainless base metals, and high-pressure piping/tubing.

Clean the weld area thoroughly before welding.

Remove oil, grease, dirt, coatings and surface contamination.
Use a dedicated stainless steel wire brush where mechanical cleaning is required to help avoid contamination from carbon steel.

Use 100% Argon shielding gas for typical TIG / GTAW applications.

Operate on DC Straight [–] / DCEN polarity.

Maintain a short arc and keep the filler rod within the shielding-gas envelope to help protect the molten weld pool from oxidation.

Adjust amperage according to base-metal thickness, joint design and rod diameter.

Eagle ER309L is a low-carbon stainless steel TIG filler rod designed primarily for dissimilar-metal welding.

Its higher chromium and nickel alloy content helps maintain a sound stainless weld deposit when joining stainless steel to carbon or low-alloy steel. Typical ER309L weld metal is around 24% chromium and 13% nickel.

Why Eagle ER309L TIG Rod?

Excellent for dissimilar metals — designed for joining stainless steel to carbon and low-alloy steels.

Low-carbon filler — helps improve resistance to intergranular corrosion.

Good resistance to hot cracking — typical ER309L weld metal contains ferrite that helps improve cracking resistance.

Versatile fabrication filler — useful in piping, petrochemical, clad steel and maintenance applications.

ER309L, ER308L or ER316L TIG?
Choose ER309L when joining stainless steel to carbon steel or other dissimilar steels.

Choose ER308L for 304/304L and similar stainless-to-stainless applications.

Choose ER316L for 316/316L stainless and applications requiring improved pitting and corrosion resistance.

In simple terms:
ER309L = stainless-to-carbon steel / dissimilar metals
ER308L = standard stainless-to-stainless
ER316L = higher corrosion resistance
