Self-Shielded Build-Up Wire for Manganese Steel

Eagle 541GL is a self-shielded flux-cored open-arc wire specifically developed for build-up and repair of manganese steels. Its high-chromium, nickel and manganese alloy deposit is designed to remain relatively soft as welded and then work-harden in service, making it especially well suited for components exposed to repeated impact and crushing loads.

With a hardness of approximately 20 HRC as deposited and up to 55 HRC after work hardening, Eagle 541GL provides a tough, durable build-up layer for high-manganese components.

Ideal for mining, aggregate, crushing and heavy equipment applications, Eagle 541GL is commonly used on crusher rolls, manganese hammers, rail frogs, shovel pads, dredge pump parts, crusher jaws, dipper lids and manganese teeth.

Soft to Weld. Hard in Service.

Eagle 541GL is recommended for:

Crusher rolls
Manganese hammers
Rail frogs
Shovel pads
Dredge pump parts
Crusher jaws
Dipper lids
Manganese teeth
High-manganese wear components
Carbon steel build-up where this alloy is suitable

Designed specifically for build-up on manganese steels and related high-impact wear components.

Clean the weld area thoroughly and remove fatigued or damaged metal before rebuilding. Use grinding where practical, or Eagle 188 airless gouging electrodes where additional material removal is required.

Use the lowest effective amperage while maintaining approximately 1/2"–3/4" stick-out. Apply stringer beads to help reduce heat input, which is particularly important when welding manganese steel.

Eagle 541GL is a high-chromium, nickel and manganese alloy wire designed for build-up on manganese and carbon steel.

Its key advantage is its work-hardening behavior. The deposit is approximately 20 HRC as welded, which helps maintain toughness and reduces the risk of an overly brittle deposit.

Under service conditions involving repeated impact and deformation, the surface can work-harden to approximately 55 HRC.

Why Eagle 541GL?

Designed for manganese steel — specifically developed for rebuilding and repairing high-manganese wear components.
Work-hardening deposit — starts around 20 HRC and can harden to approximately 55 HRC in service.

Self-shielded operation — requires no external shielding gas, making it practical for field, shop and outdoor repair.

Built for crushing and impact — excellent for crusher jaws, manganese hammers, rail frogs and other high-impact wear components.

541GL or Conventional Hardfacing?

Choose 541GL when you are repairing or rebuilding manganese steel and need a tough deposit that can work-harden under impact.

Choose 560FGS, 561GL or 563GL when the primary problem is abrasive wear and the base material/application calls for a harder chromium-carbide-style deposit.

In simple terms:
541GL = manganese build-up + work hardening
560 / 561 / 563 = abrasive hardfacing
